Getting started

Shelf lives in your menu bar. There is no window to open and no Dock icon to find.

  1. Start dragging a file in Finder. The shelf appears next to your cursor. Drop the file on it.
  2. Switch to the app you want to send it to. Drag the file off the shelf and drop it there.
  3. Press ⌥ Space any time to show or hide the shelf by hand.

Common fixes

The shelf doesn’t appear when I drag.
Shelf needs the Accessibility permission to notice drags. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility and make sure Shelf is turned on. If it is already on, turn it off and on again, then quit and reopen Shelf.
⌥ Space does nothing.
Another app may already own that shortcut. Open Shelf’s settings from the menu bar icon and pick a different hotkey. Spotlight and some launchers like to grab Space combinations.
Notch mode isn’t showing up.
Notch mode only appears on a Mac that has a notch, and only on the built‑in display. On an external monitor, or a Mac without a notch, the shelf floats next to your cursor instead.
I dropped a file and nothing happened.
The app you dropped into has to accept files by drag and drop. Try dropping the same file straight from Finder. If that doesn’t work either, the target app is the limit, not Shelf. Also check that the original file still exists. Shelf holds a reference, so a file you moved to the Trash can’t be delivered.
The shelf keeps disappearing on me.
That is auto‑hide. An empty shelf slides away after a moment. In settings you can make the delay longer, or turn auto‑hide off so the shelf stays until you close it.
Files stay on the shelf after I drop them. Or they vanish.
Both are settings. Open Shelf’s settings and change After drop to either keep files on the shelf or clear them once they’ve landed.
My shelf is empty after a restart.
Shelf remembers what you parked between launches. If it comes back empty, the files may have been moved or deleted while Shelf was closed. References to files that no longer exist are dropped.

Reporting a bug

Bugs live at github.com/Novsochetra/Shelf/issues. Look there first, someone may have hit the same thing. The more of this you include, the faster I can fix it:

  • What you did. Step by step, starting from the app you dragged out of.
  • What you expected and what happened instead.
  • Your setup. macOS version, Mac model, and whether you use notch mode, an external display, or both.
  • A screenshot or short recording if you can. It often says more than words.

If Shelf crashed, macOS shows a report. Copy the first twenty or so lines and paste them in. That is usually enough.

Refunds

If Shelf isn’t for you, tell me within 14 days of buying and I will refund you. No form to fill in and no reason needed. Just send your order number or the email you bought with.

Uninstalling

  1. Click the Shelf icon in the menu bar and choose Quit.
  2. Drag Shelf.app from Applications to the Trash.
  3. Optional: remove the Shelf folder from ~/Library/Application Support to clear its settings.

Your files are never touched. Shelf only ever held references to them.
